Transylvanian Racka Sheep

It is the most typical representative of the mountain (alpine) types of the Racka breed group of sheep. The breed has developed in the parts of Transylvania populated by Hungarians at the end of the middle ages. The hair is white, but there are irregular patches on the face and the feet which are covered by smooth, short hair. Pure white version occurs, as well. The most beautiful specimens have got eye-patches. Skull is relatively broad and also female often wear crescent-shaped or vestigial horns. Rams wear thick, open spiral-shaped horns. Its fleece is finer than that of the Hungarian Racka sheep: the hair is long and soft. It is an excellent milker. We are organizing the establishment of a nucleus stock of the breed as well as its gene rescue scheme.
